DR. MARKKU KANNINEN

Dr. Markku Kanninen is an expert in global forestry, land use, climate change, forest ecology, and forest management. He has published over 350 publications, including over 100 internationally peer-reviewed scientific articles in journals and books. He holds a DrSc degree from the University of Helsinki, Finland. He has been involved in tropical forestry research for more than 40 years. He is professor emeritus and research director of University of Helsinki, Finland. Earlier, he was Professor of tropical forestry and director of Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI), Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki (2010 2020). Prior to this, he was Director of the Environmental Services and Sustainable Use of Forests Program of CIFOR (2003-2010); Research Director and Deputy Director General of CATIE (Costa Rica) (1996-2003); and earlier the Director of The Finnish Research Program on Climate Change (1990-1995). Dr. Markku Kanninen has been involved in science policy dialogue on forests and climate change for about 30 years. He has been actively involved in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1991. He was a Lead Author of the IPCC Special Report on 1.5 degrees (2018), and member of the 15-person Finnish Climate Panel (2011-2019). He is member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters. In 2007, Dr. Markku Kanninen received the Nobel Peace Prize as a member of IPCC.
